Mike Portnoy is the acclaimed drummer of Dream Theater as well as various side-projects such as Liquid Tension Experiment, TransAtlantic, O.S.I. and tribute bands such as Yellow Matter Custard, Hammer Of The Gods, Amazing Journey and Cygnus and The Sea Monsters.

Mike was born and raised in Long Beach, New York, where his interest in music started at an early age. "My father was a rock n' roll disc jockey, so I was always surrounded by music constantly. I had this huge record collection when I was real young and loved The Beattles and then later on KISS. It was inevitable that I'd become a musician." Although Mike taught himself how to play the drums, he did take music theory classes in high school. During that time he began playing in local bands Intruder, Rising Power and Inner Sanctum, the latter which released their own album. Mike left the band after being awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee Music College in Boston.

Mike says his biggest influences are Rush drummer Neil Peart and the late Frank Zappa. Other favorites include drummers Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Colaiuta, Simon Philips, John Bonham and Keith Moon and bands such as The Beatles, Queen, Yes, Metallica, Jellyfish, Iron Maiden, U2 and Jane's Addiction. He is also a fan of rap music.

Mike's long list of Awards include 24 Modern Drummer Magazine Reader's Poll Awards including: 2004 Hall of Fame Inductee, Best Progressive Rock Drummer (12 years in a row!!), Best Clinican (twice), Best Educational Video/DVD for Liquid Drum Theater, and Best Recorded Performance of the Year (6 times) for Dream Theater's Awake, A Change of Seasons, Fallin into Infinity, Scenes From A Memory, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Score.

Live, he occasionally provides backing vocals and, at times, lead vocals while Dave Grohl plays drums. Taylor Hawkins' recordings include: drum tracks for the Coheed and Cambria album "Good Appollo", "I'm Burning Star IV" and "Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow" and most recently complete the recording of by the late Beach Boys' drummer Dennis Wilson entitled "Holy Man" by writing and singing new lyrics along with Jackson United's latest album "Harmony & Dissidence".

Kurt Levee and Host Stephen Perkins Rebroadcast of DC LIVE

Join Drum Channel as we feature Kurt Levee, Drummer with a twist!

Los Angeles based drummer, Kurt Levee, knows what he wants and goes after it! Kurt's interest in drums began as soon as he was able to hold a pair of sticks! At that point he used pots, pans, chairs or anything he was able to use in place of drums until he graduated to the real thing. His early exposure to Rock, Pop and Soul music enabled him to become a well-rounded and open-minded drummer with the ability to play nearly all styles of music. Levee’s biggest influence and inspiration came from the late, great John "Bonzo" Bonham.

Kurt has made an unforgettable impression on many important names in this business, which has lead him to work with a variety of artists including Ricky Minor, James Brown, George Clinton, Sharon Osbourne, and Slash who think highly of his accomplishments and his ability to compliment their work with his unique style. Levee says “it was an honor to have worked with "The Godfather of Soul" James Brown as well as George Clinton”, who Levee greatly admired. In addition to having worked with A-List artists, Levee has been in many publications, television and radio.

As a professional drummer as well as the drummer for the band Mini KISS, Kurt has proven his abilities many times over and continues to do so in a career with a promising future ahead of him. He has scratched the surface but has not reached his goals yet. Levee is proud to be the only drummer in history, and in the world, of his kind to have accomplished all that he has. It has been said that his playing is dynamic and that he has a great meter.
